Duncan Brooks,
MS, LPC
Meet Duncan
Basic Information
- What are your credentials and licenses? MS, LPC
- How long have you been practicing therapy? Since 2007, with about a year break between 2017/2018
- What are your areas of expertise or specialties? Systems Theory, Emotion-Focused, Attachment-Based
- What populations do you primarily work with (e.g., adults, children, couples)? couples and families
Therapeutic Approach
- What therapeutic approaches or modalities do you use? Emotion-Focused Therapy
- What is your philosophy of therapy? Everything starts with our emotions. Our ability to regulate our emotions impacts our relationships. Our relationships are based on our need to “attach” ie. to feel safe and comfortable with others. Our perception of what feels “safe and comfortable” is influenced by our early (and current) attachment figures and how they expressed their emotions. Overall, the more healthy, trusting, secure relationships (attachments) I have, the better my overall wellness and functioning. By understanding how my attachment history impacts my ability to regulate my emotions, and knowing that healthy emotional regulation is key to healthy relationships, and by acknowledging my unconscious need to attach to others, I will be able to identify opportunities for the healthy expression of vulnerable emotions and healthy conflict with a resolution to increase safety, comfort, and intimacy in my relationships.
- What can clients expect from your sessions? EFT interventions that follow traditional EFT focusing on de-escalation and deepening connections. I encourage clients to bring any recent conflict, situation, discussion, etc where strong emotions were involved with the opportunity to “experience” a transformative shift in how they view themselves and their relationships
- What kind of therapeutic relationship do you strive to build with your clients? Essentially, I am “modeling” via EFT interventions how I want the client(s) to engage with others to foster healthy attachments.
Experience and Training
- What kind of training and education have you received? EFCT Externship Training in September 2020. Began practicing EFT in the fall of 2019.
- Do you have any specific certifications or additional training? EFCT Externship Training in September 2020.
- What kind of experience do you have working with different mental health issues? Prior to emphasis on EFT, I worked with SED youth under 18 (mostly adolescent males). I worked with the chronically homeless population and out-pateint substance use treatment. I also did clinical work with adults with developmental disabilities. For the past 5 years, I have been primarily doing emotion-focused work with couples and adults.
